Ancient Livithra

Ancient Livithra, known in ancient tradition mainly from the Orphic myth, are situated at the foot of Upper Olympus, at Kanalia of nowadays, where successive aspects of Upper and Lower Olympus converge. The citadel of Livithra is surrounded by three streams that form the common bed of Ziliana, ancient Sys. The risky choice of the location seems to be the cause of the destruction of the citadel, a choice that must have been affected by the unique beauty of the natural environment. An environment that could have given birth to myths of ancient elves and of Orpheus. The ancient Livithra were destroyed by an earthquake and were abandoned due to the floods of the streams of Olympus tha followed and undermined the citadel, a large part of which collapsed in the beds. The earliest signs of life in the citadel of Livithra are placed in the 8th century BC, but the surrounding cemeteries date back at least to the Mycenaean era.

In recent years, the Olympus Festival establishe devem=nts in this beautiful space that take place during natured daylight.
