Ancient Pydna

Approximately 2km south of the village Makrigialos at ‘’Paliokitros’’ is located the ancient Pydna, «polis Ellinis», which inhabited since the Bronze Age until the Byzantine Period. The city continued to be inhabited during the Roman era and was the main center in morthern Pieria. Pydna from the early 5th century BC belonged to the Macedonian kingdom. It was the most important urban center of the kingdom and its main port. In 357 BC Philip II conquered Pydna and the settlement made significant edge, while the port became the base of the Macedonian fleet. The name is connected with the famous battle of Pydna, which was held there in 168BC and marked the dissolution of the Macedonian kingdom by the Romans.
