Byzantine Church of the Assumption of the Virgin –Kontariotissa

The Byzantine Church of the Assumption of the Virgin – Kontariotisa is the oldest Byzantine monument in Pieria. Its rare architecture and its plain decoration indicate that it was constructed at the beginning of the 11th century.

This is transitional type temple, with dome and ambulatory. Inside the temple a rare iconographic theme is saved, with Christ Almighty in the dome and the Assumption of the Virgin over the tribelon (5th or 6th century). Of particular interest is the building materials that were transferred from the neighboring Dion. A cemetery of the Early Iron Age also lies in the same region. In the courtyard of the Church, with the permission of the 9th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities, the Olympus Festival performs musical events mainly of byzantine and ecclesiastical nature.
